Back in 1948, two Texas trailblazers—Bill Renfro and Jim Burkley—had more than just a good idea. They had a vision: to bring grocery retailers and suppliers together not just to do business, but to build a community. That’s how the Food Sales Association (FSA) was born, and over the years, it became something much greater than just a handshake-and-deal kind of group—it became a driving force in the industry.

 

By 1999, FSA took a bold new step. They knew the future of food retail wasn’t in boardrooms yet—it was sitting in classrooms, waiting for an opportunity. That’s when they launched the FSA Scholarship Program, making sure the next generation had the tools to succeed.

 

Fast forward to 2015, and the mission got even bigger. With the creation of the FSA Endowment Fund, the focus shifted from helping a few students today to building a lasting legacy for tomorrow. It became more than just scholarships—it became an investment in the future of the food retailing industry.

 

Today, the FSA Scholarship Foundation is proof that when vision meets heart, incredible things happen. We’re here to empower hardworking individuals, strengthen communities, and shape the future of a Texas industry that feeds, fuels, and touches us all.

Applications begin in 2026

The FSA Scholarship is designed to support individuals who are passionate about building a future in the grocery and beverage industry. To qualify, applicants must:

  1. Demonstrate a sincere interest in pursuing a career in the food retail industry.

  2. Be a graduating high school senior (Class of 2025) or a post-high school adult with proof of a diploma, GED, or college transcript.

  3. Be employed (or have a parent/guardian employed) by a participating Texas food or beverage retailer on or before June 15, 2025, and remain employed through May 30, 2026.

  4. Reside within a participating Texas county.

  5. If previously awarded an FSA Scholarship, may reapply if they have not received more than one scholarship and all prior awards have been paid out before June 30, 2026.

Attach all Required Documents:

• Essay (500-word limit)

• Store Manager’s Comment Sheet (SMCS)

• 2 Personal/Professional Reference Letters

• Proof of Education (High School/GED and/or College Transcripts, ACT/SAT Scores if applicable)

Copy and Retain All Documents for Records.

Submit all materials via the FSA Scholarship Foundation Form.

Scholarship Opportunities

On May 1, 2014, with a unanimous vote (because who doesn’t love a dramatic flourish?), the board renamed the organization the FSA Scholarship Foundation. The new name wasn’t just a facelift—it was a declaration of purpose: to create an enduring legacy of educational leadership for the next generation of the food industry in Texas. And as if that wasn’t enough, they also established the FSA Scholarship Foundation Endowment Fund, ensuring their vision could continue paying dividends well into the future.

 

Today, the FSA Scholarship Foundation isn’t just an organization; it’s a powerhouse community, representing over 250 organizations and 600 representatives from national, regional, and local companies. Not bad for a group that started with a dream and a little determination!
